Wauzhushk Onigum Nation Files Legal Suite over Casino Licence

The hearing will take place from April 8 to 11, 2018, in the Divisional Court […] Wauzhushk Onigum Nation had applied for a judicial review of the OLG’s decision to allow Gateway Casinos and Entertainment to build a casino in Kenora, but not on tribal land. It was a part of a bundle of projects awarded to the casino corporation by OLG after a lengthy bidding process. Wauzhushk Onigum adds that a casino was, and is badly needed to provide income for necessities of life for community members, and to exercise the First Nation’s rights. They say that a casino involving the community would help to strengthen the local economy and workforce. Gateway was awarded the 20-year licence for Northern and Southern Ontario in 2016, and Kenora would be one of five of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation aims to have the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Divisional Court overthrow decisions the Ontario Lotteries and Gaming Corporation and the Ministry of Finance made that the First Nation says threw them out of the running for operating a casino in the Kenora area. Wauzhushk Onigum Nation takes matters to court, claiming that over the past years it witnessed Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s malicious agenda to eliminate all gaming possibilities for the First Nation.
